Twitter Book Club

A few months ago I had an idea to start a Twitter book club. I threw the idea out there and many of you expressed interest. We were going to meet in person every 6-8 weeks and have an official book club. Well, life got complicated and the book club idea got put on the back burner.

Today on Twitter, Peggy mentioned a new book she was going to read written by local Marin County authors.  I clicked on the link and saw a book that looked like some super fun summer reading!

Peggy DM'd me and suggested maybe we bring back the book club idea and start with this book. At the same time one of the authors of the book (Sue) DM'd me saying she loved my blog. I'm a sucker for compliments so I'm reading her book. ;-) No seriously, the book looks fun and so do the authors! I actually spoke to Sue on the phone and invited her to the TweetUp this Thursday. On such short notice I'm not sure if she's coming but I hope she does.

So.... here is my book club proposal. We start a Twitter book club. It will be a book club for the busy people of Marin (and beyond). We decide what book we are going to read via Twitter, we discuss the book on Twitter, and that's it! We just need a hashtag for our book club. Any ideas? Something short enough so we have room to discuss the book.

The unofficial Twitter book club starts today. Peggy and I will be reading the Meant to Be book written by local Marin County authors Beverly Butler and Sue Warhaftig. You can follow them on Twitter at @meanttobebook.

Do you want to join us? All you have to do is get the book and read it!

Maybe we can schedule an evening or weekend to have a Twitter chat discussing the book.

The cool thing about a Twitter book club is anyone can join! What are you waiting for?

We can even discuss the books here on this site. Maybe we can start a new article for each book we read and write a little book review and discuss it via the comments. What do you think?

For the local Marin Tweeps who join the book club we can also do occasional in person book club TweetUps just for fun.

So there you have it!

How to join the book club:

1. Get the book (it's only $3.99): http://www.meant-to-be.net/buy-the-book (I'm not sure but it may only be available on Kindle right now. I'm reading it via my iPad using the Kindle app.)

2. Send me a tweet via @Sally_K  letting me know you're in or leave a comment below.

3. Use hashtag #meanttobebook to discuss the book.

I just made up this whole idea as I was typing so I am very open to suggestions.

Who is in?

Time to read!

***UPDATE - due date for finishing reading Meant to Be is July 15th, 2011***
Here is how the book club is going to work: http://sallyaroundthebay.kontribune.com/articles/230

Here is a description of the book taken from their Website:

"There are two kinds of women in the world: those who read highbrow literature from distinguished authors…and the rest of us.

Beverly Butler and Sue Warhaftig have created a provocative page-turner for women who want “escape” reading at the end of their busy days.

The novel is about Judith McCoy, a middle-aged mom who hasn’t been taking care of herself because she’s too busy taking care of others. Today’s multi-tasking women readers will relate to Judith’s plight and root for her as she winds along the bumpy road of self-discovery.

The book is sexy, irreverent, moving, funny and, ultimately, uplifting. It’s filled with characters who try to genuinely help Judith and some who are the reason for her despair."

I'm in! I haven't read a novel in ages. Very excited to read this one. Thanks, Sally, for organizing our very own book club!

I'm in! I love picking a book that was written by local authors and that we can read on our iPads. Thanks!

Sounds like fun, and if I download the book onto my iPad, I can still have it in my hands 24/7.

Should we set a date to have the first discussion about the book on Twitter? It needs to be after I return from Colombia. I'll be back at the end of the month.

I'm in Austin, but I'll play. I would suggestion choosing a hashtag that you can use for all books from the start. #twooks or #twbooks... even #bclub is available?

I would also give at least a month advance notice so we have time to read it... LOL... like the 3rd Wednesday of the month or whatever.. I also have a book to recommend, although I'm sure Sally read it already (Illuminations)

Yay! Candy the queen of reading is in our book club! Now this means Candy has to come to our TweetUps! Candy when are you coming to visit? Candy has probably read more books than all of us combined.

I seriously do want to visit SF again. I so loved it there... maybe next year since I cannot go to one of the conferences I usually attend, I'll come visit you instead :) Actually... remind me in the Fall, we were talking about doing a bookkeepers retreat, maybe we'll do it over near you :)

Candy - Yes, I think you should do it near me. I know a nice hotel in Mill Valley that would be more affordable than SF and it's in a beautiful location... let's talk if you decide to do the retreat here. Celia will provide the entertainment, I'll have her sing for you all. :-)

Sally, Sally, Sally... we love that you have chosen Meant To Be as your first #twitterbookclub book! Not only is Meant To be a fun read, it was fun to write! We had no experience, no road map, no damn rules how it had to be done, just the desire and drive to write a book! We figured "why not"?!

...We all have crazy, busy lives and we are honored that you are using your precious relaxation time with our story. Have fun and I can't wait to talk with you about it soon. Please tell your all friends to join us! Humbly yours, Sue
